The star-shaped leaves of ‘Tsukushi gata’ emerge purple-red changing to a chocolate-red. A green cast develops in midsummer before changing to crimson in fall. ‘Tsukushi gata’ is the name of a Japanese bay in Kyushu. This cultivar has also been spelled as ‘Chikushi gata’, Shikishigata’, ‘Shikushigata’, and ‘Tsukishi gata’. This attractive tree may grow to 12 feet in ten years.
